Accra High Court Dismisses Lawsuit Against Kenedy Agyapong.

In a landmark ruling on Wednesday, the Accra High Court dismissed a lawsuit against controversial Ghanaian politician, Kenedy Agyapong. The lawsuit had been brought against him by the renowned investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, over comments Agyapong made about him on a television program.

Agyapong had called Anas “a blackmailer, corrupt, an extortionist, and evil,” after the journalist had aired a documentary exposing corruption in Ghanaian football, which led to the resignation of the president of the Ghana Football Association, Kwasi Nyantakyi.

The lawsuit filed by Anas alleged that Agyapong’s comments were defamatory and sought to harm his reputation. However, the Accra High Court ruled that Agyapong’s comments were not defamatory and that Anas’s actions were not investigative journalism, but rather, “investigative terrorism.”

In his ruling, Justice Kwaku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo stated that the documentary produced by Anas and his team was not investigative journalism, but rather a form of “entrapment” and “deception.” He also said that Anas and his team had engaged in “unethical and illegal practices” during their investigations.

Speaking to journalists after the court hearing, Agyapong expressed his satisfaction with the ruling and called for Anas to apologize. “Anas has to come out and apologize. All I am saying is the victory is for Kwasi Nyantakyi,” Agyapong said.

The ruling has sparked mixed reactions from Ghanaians, with some applauding the decision as a victory for freedom of speech, while others have criticized it as a blow to investigative journalism and a setback for the fight against corruption in Ghana.

It remains to be seen how this ruling will impact the future of investigative journalism in Ghana, but for now, it is a victory for Kenedy Agyapong, and a setback for Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his team.
